Ghana to host Pan African AI Summit in September

Accra, April 17,  – Ghana is set to host the Pan African AI Summit in September as part of efforts to promote digital innovation and strengthen the country’s position as a regional hub for artificial intelligence development.

The two-day summit, scheduled for September 22–23 at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra, is being organised through a partnership between the Pan African AI Summit and the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment.

It will focus on equipping young people with digital skills and leveraging artificial intelligence to support economic transformation across the continent.

The event is expected to attract policymakers, technology experts, researchers and industry leaders from across Africa to deliberate on how the continent can strengthen its competitiveness in the global AI space.

Discussions will also centre on practical applications of artificial intelligence in key sectors such as agriculture, education and healthcare, where digital tools and predictive systems are increasingly being used to improve efficiency and outcomes.

A statement from the organisers on Friday said the initiative follows engagements with the Ministry aimed at developing youth capacity in artificial intelligence, data science and digital entrepreneurship.

Citing Ghana Statistical Service data (2025), the organisers noted that youth unemployment among persons aged 15–24 stands at about 32.4 per cent, with over 1.3 million young people classified as not in employment, education or training (NEET).

They further highlighted that Ghana’s median age of 21.3 years presents both a demographic opportunity and an urgent need for skills development to support future job creation.

Projections indicate that by 2030, a significant share of jobs in the informal sector will require digital literacy, making early investment in technology training essential.

The collaboration is expected to prioritise long-term ecosystem development rather than short-term employment interventions, with emphasis on building sustainable digital skills pipelines.

Key focus areas include nationwide AI literacy campaigns, expansion of data science training, and the establishment of innovation hubs to support youth-led technology startups.

Stakeholders also stressed the importance of strengthening digital infrastructure, particularly improved internet connectivity, to ensure wider access to digital opportunities.

The initiative aligns with government efforts under the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation to expand Ghana’s digital economy and promote inclusive technological growth.
