Cape Coast, April 20, – Eight National Security operatives arrested at Assin Fosu in the Central Region over allegations of robbery involving gold, cash and mobile phones at Awisam have been granted police inquiry bail.
The suspects were arrested following reports that they allegedly stormed an illegal mining site at Awisam and seized items including gold, cash and mobile phones.
Community sources indicated that the group arrived in a black Mitsubishi pick-up with registration number GS 8293-18 and a Toyota Voxy, during the operation.
Some victims alleged that the operatives confiscated an excavator, unspecified quantities of gold, cash and mobile phones during the incident.
Two of the suspects are reportedly sons of prominent political figures within the ruling government in the area, according to local accounts.
The incident sparked tension in the community, with angry residents initially confronting the operatives and deflating tyres of their vehicles.
They were, however, prevented from carrying out further attacks after the intervention of the local Mmrantehene, who facilitated the suspects’ transfer to the Assin Awisam Police Station.
Hundreds of youths later gathered at the station, but police reinforcement from the Central North Regional Command restored calm before the suspects were moved under tight security to Assin Fosu for further investigation.
Police sources indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the suspects admitted to taking mobile phones as exhibits but denied stealing gold.
Residents have accused the group of repeated harassment and extortion under the guise of security operations, with allegations that similar incidents have occurred in the past.
A local youth claimed the group had previously extorted money from miners and allegedly destroyed equipment belonging to a miner who failed to meet their demands.
He warned that continued alleged abuses by persons posing as security operatives could heighten tensions in the area if not urgently addressed.
Police say investigations are ongoing.
