Accra, April 14, – New Ghana Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz says he is approaching his appointment with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment as he prepares to lead the national team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced Portuguese tactician was confirmed as head coach of the senior national team by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), ahead of the tournament to be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
In his first remarks after the appointment, Queiroz expressed appreciation to the GFA for the confidence reposed in him.
“It is with a deep sense of gratitude to the GFA, responsibility and humility that I embrace this new chapter with the national football team of Ghana,” he said.
He described the role as a major mission rather than a routine coaching assignment, stressing that his career experience had prepared him for such challenges.
“Football has given me a lifetime of challenges, lessons and unforgettable journeys all over the world. I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career,” he added.
Queiroz noted that Ghana’s football tradition made the job particularly meaningful, describing the country as one with strong talent, pride and football culture.
He said success with the Black Stars would require unity, discipline and a shared ambition to meet national expectations.
“This is not just another job — it is a mission. I am ready to give all of my experience and knowledge in service of the game and the happiness of the people,” he stated.
Queiroz brings extensive international experience, having coached clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United, as well as national teams including Portugal, Iran, South Africa, Egypt, Oman, Japan and Qatar.
He has featured at four FIFA World Cup tournaments as head coach, leading South Africa to the 2002 World Cup, Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and Iran in 2014 and 2018.
Queiroz is expected to begin preparations immediately as Ghana builds up to the World Cup, where the Black Stars will face Panama, England and Croatia in the group stage.
