Accra, April 14, – Carlos Manuel Brito Leal de Queiroz is one of the most widely travelled coaches in world football, with managerial experience spanning Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and North America.
The Portuguese tactician has been appointed head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, a role that adds to an already extensive international coaching résumé.
Queiroz arrives in Ghana with a reputation for tactical discipline, tournament management and rebuilding teams, qualities that could be tested in a football environment known for high public expectations.
Born on March 1, 1953, Queiroz’s coaching career spans more than four decades across club and international football.
He has previously managed national teams including Portugal, South Africa, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, while also working at club level with Sporting CP, Real Madrid and the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. He also served as assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Queiroz first gained global recognition at youth level, where he led Portugal’s “Golden Generation” to consecutive FIFA U-20 World Cup titles in 1989 and 1991, helping develop players such as Luís Figo and Rui Costa.
At senior level, he won the Portuguese Cup with Sporting CP in the 1994–95 season and later secured the Portuguese Super Cup. He also won the Spanish Super Cup with Real Madrid in 2003.
On the international stage, Queiroz guided South Africa to their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 2002 and later led Portugal to the 2010 World Cup, where they recorded a 7–0 victory over North Korea.
His tenure with Iran is regarded as one of his most successful spells, having led the team to consecutive World Cup appearances in 2014, 2018 and 2022, while also achieving strong qualification records.
In Africa, he coached Egypt to the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations shortly after taking charge, narrowly losing to Senegal on penalties, further strengthening his continental credentials.
Queiroz is widely regarded as a coach who builds structured, defensively disciplined teams capable of competing against stronger opposition.
His appointment comes as Ghana prepares for the 2026 World Cup, where the Black Stars are grouped with Panama, England and Croatia. The team will begin its campaign on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, Canada.
