PURC resolves majority of utility complaints in Central Region as cases rise

Cape Coast, April 15, – The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) in the Central Region has recorded a 93 per cent resolution rate for complaints received in the first quarter of 2026, despite a noticeable increase in consumer grievances.

The Commission said it handled 414 out of 444 complaints filed between January and March, with the remaining cases still under investigation.

According to its quarterly report, most of the complaints—about 352 cases—were directed at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), while 77 involved the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWL), and 15 were lodged against individual consumers.

The majority of the cases were linked to service quality concerns, with others relating to billing disputes, metering challenges, payment issues, unlawful disconnections, and property damage.

PURC noted that complaint levels had increased compared to the same period in 2025 and 2024, attributing the rise to intensified monitoring activities and outreach programmes such as “PURC in Your Home” and complaint clinics.

During the period under review, the Commission carried out inspections at ECG and GWL district offices and customer service centres across selected districts.

It also organised four complaint clinics at Supredo, Egyaa No. 2 and 3, Egyaa No. 1 in the Mfantseman Municipality, and Odwumase, engaging over 100 consumers and distributing educational materials on consumer rights and responsibilities.

The Commission said sustained engagement with stakeholders had contributed to improved responsiveness from utility providers and greater public awareness of complaint procedures.

It added that stronger collaboration between consumers and service providers had enhanced transparency and helped build trust in the utility sector.
