Tamale, April 21, – A special anti-drug operation by the Northern Regional Police Command has led to the arrest of seven persons and the retrieval of quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp within the Tamale Metropolis.
The exercise, undertaken by the Police Special Operations Team known as “Red Maria”, took place on Monday night at about 2030 hours as part of intensified efforts to combat drug-related offences in the region.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Unit and copied to the press, the operation involved 44 personnel who undertook targeted raids at identified locations, including Zogbeli, Kukuo and Savelugu.
At Zogbeli, four individuals—Sulemana Sualha, 20; Alhassan Ayisha, 25; Abdul Fatawu Damba, 16; and Mohammed Amin, 20—were arrested on suspicion of engaging in the sale and possession of narcotic substances.
Two more suspects, Ibrahim Abdulai, 20, and Issah Abass, 17, were apprehended at Kukuo during a follow-up exercise.
The team later proceeded to Savelugu, where Ibrahim Osuman, 21, was arrested based on intelligence linking him to drug peddling activities, although a search conducted in his room yielded no exhibits.
In all, 40 wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp were retrieved during the operation.
The statement said the suspects remain in custody and are assisting the Police with investigations.
