Accra, April 7, – The Accra Regional Police Command has begun a manhunt for individuals involved in a disturbance and the unlawful discharge of firearms at the Kotoku Onion Market.
Preliminary investigations suggest that tensions erupted among five onion sellers’ associations over the distribution of onions supplied by foreign traders, triggering unrest at the market.
According to a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs of the Command, the incident occurred on April 6, 2026, when a confrontation between members of the associations escalated, with gunshots reportedly fired from an unidentified location.
Police personnel quickly responded to the scene but were unable to immediately locate those responsible for the shooting.
The statement indicated that patrol teams have since been deployed to the area to maintain order, while engagements are ongoing with the leadership of the associations to help de-escalate tensions.
It added that police visibility in and around the market has been intensified to prevent any further disturbances.
The leadership of the five associations, according to the Command, has been engaged and has pledged cooperation with law enforcement to ensure peace is restored.
The Police further cautioned the public against violence and the illegal use of firearms, urging disputing parties to rely on lawful channels for conflict resolution.
The Command assured residents and traders that the situation is under control and remains under close monitoring.
