Parliament rejects motion to probe $214m Gold-for-Reserves loss claim

Accra, March 28,  – Parliament has rejected a motion seeking the establishment of an ad hoc committee to investigate an alleged $214 million loss linked to the Gold-for-Reserves programme.

The motion, filed by Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, sought a comprehensive inquiry into the programme’s design, implementation, governance structure, financial performance and environmental implications.

However, the Majority Caucus opposed the request, explaining that the amount being described as a loss constituted operational and transactional costs associated with the implementation of the programme and did not justify a parliamentary probe.

The motion was subsequently rejected through a voice vote, with the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, also turning down a request by the Minority for the decision to be taken through a secret ballot.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah maintained that an investigation was necessary to ensure transparency and to confirm that public funds were not linked to illegal mining activities.

The Majority Caucus, on the other hand, insisted that the figures being discussed had been misinterpreted and formed part of normal operational costs under the policy.
