Palestinian Embassy calls for sanctions over Israeli death penalty law

Accra, April 8, – The Palestinian Embassy in Ghana has called on the international community to impose sanctions and pursue legal action against Israel over a newly enacted law allowing the death penalty for certain Palestinian detainees.

The Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy, Mr Ahmed Abu Dalfa, said the legislation violates international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention, and warned that continued inaction by the global community could worsen the situation.

He made the remarks at a press briefing in Accra, where he urged immediate diplomatic and political pressure on Israel to repeal the law and ensure the protection of Palestinian prisoners.

Mr Dalfa said the law, passed by the Israeli Knesset on March 30, 2026, permits capital punishment for Palestinians convicted of killings classified as “terrorism-related” or “nationalistic” offences.

He described the legislation as discriminatory and said it institutionalises inequality and systemic injustice.

Mr Dalfa further alleged ongoing human rights violations, including killings, enforced disappearances, and denial of basic rights, particularly affecting detainees in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

He said more than 9,500 Palestinian prisoners, including women and children, were facing worsening conditions despite a declared ceasefire.

The envoy reiterated calls for sanctions and urged the use of international judicial mechanisms to hold responsible parties accountable.

Representatives from the Cuban and Algerian embassies in Ghana attended the briefing in solidarity.
