Overtaking Attempt Turns Fatal as SHS Student Dies in Oti Motorbike Crash

Dambai (O/R), April 9,  – A final-year student of Yabram Community Day Senior High School in the Krachi East Municipality has lost his life in a road crash involving a motorbike and a tipper truck.

The incident happened on the Yariga No. 2–Nkwanta Junction stretch in the Oti Region and involved a truck with registration number GT 3484-26.

Reports indicate that the student was riding a motorbike with a colleague when they attempted to overtake the truck while travelling from Nkwanta Junction towards Yariga No. 2.

At the same time, the truck driver was making a turn, a situation the motorbike riders were reportedly unaware of, leading to a collision with the vehicle’s front tyre.

The impact caused the rider to be thrown off the motorbike, resulting in his immediate death at the scene.

The pillion passenger survived but sustained serious injuries to the legs and arms and was taken to a nearby health facility for treatment.

A witness, Mr Simon Poamba, explained that the motorbike tried to pass the truck on the passenger side just as the vehicle was turning, leading to the fatal impact.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service in Dambai has confirmed the crash.

Corporal Zakaria Asharift said the deceased’s body has been deposited at the Worawora Government Hospital morgue, while investigations continue to establish the exact circumstances.

The death has left the Yabram Community Day SHS and surrounding area in shock, with school authorities describing the student as hardworking and full of promise.

The tragedy has also reignited concerns over road safety and the growing use of motorbikes among young people in the area.

Residents and stakeholders are calling for stronger road safety education, stricter enforcement of traffic rules, and improved transport safety measures to prevent further incidents.

Authorities are continuing their investigations as condolences pour in for the bereaved family.
