NPP raises alarm over Yakubu arrest, questions police procedure

Sunyani (Bono), April 13, 2026 — The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised the arrest of Mr Abubakar Yakubu, Communications Officer of its Sunyani East Constituency, describing the development as troubling and raising concerns about due process and civil liberties.

According to a statement issued by the party, Mr Yakubu—also known as “Baba Amando”—had reported to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters in Sunyani in the company of his lawyer, Mr Alfred Tuah Yeboah, a former Deputy Attorney-General, after what he believed was an official invitation from the Police Service.

The statement explained that upon arrival, officers at the regional command indicated they had no record of such an invitation, despite earlier communication directing him to report.

It further stated that subsequent checks with the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra revealed that Mr Yakubu was in fact required to report there, not in Sunyani.

Following this clarification, the CID in Accra reportedly instructed that he be arrested and transferred from Bono Region to the national headquarters. He has since been taken into custody and is being moved to Accra.

Signed by Mr Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP National Organiser, the statement argued that the incident reflects broader concerns about the use of state security processes and warned against actions that could be perceived as intimidation of political actors.

The party said the development raised questions about free speech and democratic safeguards, adding that such incidents risk undermining public confidence in state institutions.

It also described the situation as a distraction from pressing national issues, citing concerns including the cost of living, utility tariffs, fuel prices, and government policy delivery challenges.

Meanwhile, some supporters of the party in Sunyani East gathered at the regional police headquarters to protest the arrest, chanting party slogans and describing the move as politically motivated.

The matter continues to generate discussion among party members and sympathisers both on the ground and across social media platforms.
