NEDCo apologises over power outages, outlines measures to stabilise supply

Tamale, April 16, – The Northern Electricity Distribution Company Limited (NEDCo) has apologised to customers for the recent decline in power supply across its operational areas, particularly in Tamale.

Mr Maxwell Kotoka, Communications Manager of NEDCo, who made the apology at a press briefing in Tamale, acknowledged the inconvenience caused and assured consumers that steps were being taken to address the situation.

He explained that preliminary assessments indicated that the challenges were not related to power generation or transmission but were largely due to distribution constraints within the network.

Mr Kotoka said although feeders remained stable, the disruptions were localised and linked to undersized conductors, overloaded transformers and substations, as well as interference by some consumers, which had in some cases resulted in equipment damage.

He said the company had conducted a detailed assessment to guide interventions, leading to the implementation of short-term and medium- to long-term measures to improve supply reliability.

As part of immediate actions, Mr Kotoka said NEDCo had increased its fault response teams from one to three to ensure quicker response to outages and customer complaints.

He added that working hours for the teams had been extended to improve efficiency, while complaint lines had been reactivated and strengthened to enhance accessibility and responsiveness.

Mr Kotoka said additional transformers were also being installed to help stabilise power supply in affected areas.

On medium- to long-term measures, he said the company was expecting to receive 500 transformers from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to reinforce the distribution network.

He said the first batch of the transformers was expected to arrive within the next two weeks.

Mr Kotoka noted that NEDCo would intensify stakeholder engagement and public education to discourage interference with the electricity network, warning that sanctions would be applied to offenders.

He said the company had already engaged the Northern Regional Coordinating Council and the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly on the issue.

He added that plans were underway to upgrade primary substations across NEDCo’s operational areas to ensure a more stable and reliable power supply.
