Morocco Strengthens Global Security Ties in Major Criminal Investigations

Accra, March 30, – Moroccan security services have played a central role in two major U.S.-led criminal investigations, highlighting their growing importance in countering transnational crime and terrorism.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia recently disclosed two cases involving complex networks spanning the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. The first concerns Lebanese‑Syrian national Antoine Kassis, convicted of narco-terrorism conspiracy, coordinating cocaine shipments, laundering proceeds, and supplying weapons to Colombia’s National Liberation Army (ELN).

In the second case, Bulgarian arms trafficker Peter Dimitrov Mirchev attempted to supply surface-to-air missiles, drones, and other heavy weaponry to Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Moroccan authorities arrested a Kenyan national, Elisha Odhiambo Asumo, in Casablanca as part of this operation.

Investigative reports indicate that Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST) provided critical operational support in both cases. Analysts note that these collaborations involved intelligence and law-enforcement agencies across Ghana, Kenya, Spain, and the United States, reflecting the global reach of hybrid criminal-terrorist networks.

Experts say the cases illustrate the evolving threat landscape, where criminal trafficking and terrorist financing increasingly overlap. They emphasise that effective responses require coordinated international intelligence-sharing and operational frameworks, with Morocco emerging as a key hub in these efforts.
