Mali Withdraws Recognition of SADR, Endorses Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal

Accra, April 10, – The Republic of Mali has formally withdrawn its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), citing regional peace and security considerations as key reasons for the decision.

The announcement was contained in an official declaration issued by Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr Abdoulaye Diop, following bilateral discussions with Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Mr Nasser Bourita.

According to the statement, the decision was reached after what Malian authorities described as a “thorough analysis” of the Sahara issue and its implications for stability in the sub-region.

Mr Bourita is currently in Bamako on an official visit carried out under the directives of King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

In the same declaration, Mali expressed strong support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as the “only serious and credible framework” for resolving the long-standing dispute.

It further stated that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty” represents the most practical and realistic pathway toward a lasting settlement.

Mali also reiterated its backing for ongoing United Nations-led efforts, including the work of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, and referenced Security Council Resolution 2797 adopted on October 31, 2025.

The government indicated that it would formally communicate its decision to relevant regional and international bodies, as well as diplomatic missions accredited to Bamako.
