Jasikan (O/R), April 13, 2026 — John Dramani Mahama has lauded the Catholic Church for its enduring role in Ghana’s socio-economic development, citing its influence in education, healthcare delivery, and social welfare.
Delivering a message on behalf of the President, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah said the Church had consistently contributed to nation-building by promoting discipline, ethical values, and community cohesion.
The remarks were made during the episcopal ordination of Simon Kofi Appiah as Bishop of the Jasikan Catholic Diocese in the Oti Region.
He described the event as both a spiritual elevation and a recognition of Bishop Appiah’s years of dedicated service, urging him to uphold integrity and provide guidance not only to the faithful but to society at large.
The President also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing Bishop, Gabriel Akwasi Ababio Mante, noting that his tenure had strengthened unity and advanced development within the Diocese.
Mr Afriyie-Ankrah emphasised that national progress required strong moral underpinnings alongside economic and political systems, and called for continued collaboration between religious institutions and the state.
John Kwadwo Gyapong, Oti Regional Minister, appealed to the new Bishop to play an active developmental role in the region, stressing the importance of peace and social harmony.
The ceremony attracted clergy, traditional leaders, public officials, and residents, marking a significant moment for the Diocese and the wider community.
