Accra, April 2, – President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday night hosted Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to a state banquet in Accra, underscoring the enduring diplomatic and historical ties between Ghana and Zimbabwe.
President Mnangagwa is in Ghana on a three-day state visit that began on April 1.
The banquet formed part of official engagements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and sustainable development, while celebrating longstanding relations rooted in shared history and Pan-African ideals.
In his remarks, President Mahama highlighted the deep historical bonds between the two nations, noting that their relationship predates formal diplomacy and was forged during Africa’s liberation struggles led by figures such as Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and the late President Robert Mugabe.
He described the occasion as more than a ceremonial event, emphasising the enduring human and political connections that continue to shape relations between the two countries.
The President recalled that Mr Mugabe once lived and worked in Ghana as a teacher, adding that his marriage to Madam Sally Mugabe, a Ghanaian, further strengthened ties between the two nations.
He said the relationship between Ghana and Zimbabwe had remained resilient over time, adapting to changing global dynamics while maintaining mutual respect and trust.
“Tonight, we celebrate not only your visit but a partnership that continues to evolve and deliver shared benefits to our people,” President Mahama stated.
He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, investment and economic transformation.
President Mnangagwa, on his part, expressed gratitude to Ghana for its historic support during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
“Most of my colleagues received training here in Ghana for the armed liberation of Zimbabwe. We are forever grateful,” he said.
He noted that the visit offered renewed opportunities to enhance business-to-business relations and strengthen economic collaboration between the two countries.
The ceremony also featured an exchange of symbolic gifts, reflecting the cultural and diplomatic bonds between the two nations.
