Tamale, April 18, – President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of a major 24-hour Economy Market at Kukuo in Tamale, describing it as the largest facility under the government’s nationwide market infrastructure programme.
The project, which is expected to be completed within 34 months, is however projected by contractors to be ready for use within 24 months.
Addressing the sod-cutting ceremony on Saturday, President Mahama said the Tamale facility stands out as the flagship model among similar markets being developed across metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies under the 24-hour Economy initiative.
He explained that the broader policy is aimed at transforming Ghana’s economic structure by promoting continuous production, trade and employment creation beyond traditional working hours.
According to him, the Tamale market has been designed as a fully integrated commercial centre to support round-the-clock activity and improve efficiency in the supply chain.
The facility will include lockable shops, 132 open sheds for traders in foodstuffs and vegetables, and open pavement spaces for about 160 table-top traders.
It will also feature 10 warehouses for storage, a lorry terminal, a transport terminal for commercial vehicles, a butcher shop and a cold storage unit to preserve perishable goods.
Security and public safety components will include a permanent police post and fire station to serve both the market and surrounding communities.
Health and social infrastructure planned for the facility include a six-bed clinic, a pharmacy, a market management office, an environmental health office, and an information centre to support communication and public announcements.
Additional amenities such as toilet and shower facilities, a crèche for traders with young children, and a women’s bank for safe savings are also part of the design.
President Mahama said the project is intended to go beyond trading activities, positioning the market as a modern economic hub that supports productivity, safety and social welfare.
He also assured residents that government was working to address the persistent water challenges in Tamale to support both households and commercial activities.
Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, said the initiative would help add value to local produce and drive industrial growth, particularly in the agricultural sector.
The Gukpe-Naa, whose speech was read on his behalf, expressed appreciation to government for ongoing development projects in the area, including roads, while urging urgent attention to the water situation to sustain economic activities.
