Mahama Applauds GWL Boss, Reaffirms Safe Water as a Right for All

Accra, April 7, – President John Dramani Mahama has commended Mr Adam Mutawakilu, Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd (GWL), for his efforts in expanding access to safe and reliable water supply across the country.

He reiterated that access to potable water remained a fundamental human right and not a privilege, stressing the need for sustained investment and strong institutional commitment to the sector.

President Mahama gave the commendation at the weekend during the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association at Buipe.

“With regard to safe water, we know it is a right and not a privilege. I want to thank my younger brother, Adam Mutawakilu, for the work he has done. We did not send him to Ghana Water Company for nothing. He has done all the leg work,” the President said.

The President’s remarks underscore government’s continued focus on strengthening water delivery systems and ensuring equitable access to safe drinking water, especially in underserved communities.

Touching on ongoing infrastructure expansion, President Mahama disclosed that all preparatory work for the Damango Water Supply System had been completed.

The project, with funding support from the European Union, would draw raw water from the White Volta at Yapei and convey it to Damango for treatment and distribution to residents.

The system is expected to significantly improve access to potable water for about 8,000 people in Damango and surrounding communities, where residents currently face challenges in securing reliable water supply.

President Mahama further announced that the Minister of Finance had signed the commitment letter for the project to commence, describing it as a major step towards addressing water challenges in the Savannah Region.

“I am happy to announce that just last week, the Minister of Finance signed the commitment letter for the Damango Water Supply System to start. Galus, well done,” he added.
