Homowo Season: Peace Council Calls for Calm as Noisemaking Ban Nears

Accra, April 7, – The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council (GARPC) has urged the public to comply with the upcoming ban on drumming and noisemaking imposed by the Ga Traditional Council ahead of the Homowo festival.

In a statement copied to the Press, the Council advised religious bodies, political parties, traditional authorities, and civil society organisations within the affected areas to respect the sanctity of the period scheduled from May 4 to June 4, 2026.

Rt. Rev. Samuel Kofi Osabutey, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, emphasised the need for full cooperation, urging that any violations be reported to the appropriate authorities and handled with restraint.

The annual ban, observed by Ga communities, is a period dedicated to reflection, spiritual purification, and the performance of customary rites in preparation for the Homowo festival.

“The GARPC recognises the cultural and spiritual importance of this observance, which forms an integral part of the identity and heritage of our people,” the statement said.

It, therefore, called on all residents, citizens, and visitors within the jurisdiction to strictly adhere to the restrictions on drumming and all forms of noise-making during the stipulated period.

The Council further advised religious organisations to avoid the use of musical instruments, loudspeakers, and other noise-generating equipment in both public and private spaces. It also cautioned that political, social, and commercial activities must not contravene the terms of the ban.

The statement appealed to security agencies to work closely with traditional authorities to ensure peaceful enforcement, urging that any infractions be addressed in a manner that promotes dialogue and preserves harmony.

It also called on the media to intensify public education across the country, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities, to ensure widespread awareness and compliance.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to fostering peace, tolerance, and mutual respect throughout the observance period.

The Ga Traditional Council’s annual ban on drumming and noisemaking, from May 4 to June 4, forms part of preparations towards the Homowo festival and prohibits loud music, funerals, and noisy religious activities.
