Call grows for public education on new post-results school placement system

Tema, April 8, – A Senior Lecturer at the Accra Technical University Business School, Dr Daniel Osabutey, has called for intensified public sensitisation to support the implementation of the new school placement system for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates.

He said clear and accessible communication was essential to help students and parents understand how the revised process would work, especially as candidates would now be required to confirm their preferred senior high schools after the release of their results.

Dr Osabutey, noted that the change would require students to make informed decisions within a limited timeframe, making guidance and counselling services critical.

He urged the Ghana Education Service to ensure that counsellors and teachers were readily available immediately after results are released to assist students in interpreting their performance and selecting suitable schools.

He also highlighted the need to strengthen digital infrastructure to support the process, as candidates would have about one week to complete their school selections.

Dr Osabutey warned that the short window could disadvantage students in rural areas where access to reliable internet and information may be limited.

He further cautioned that the new system could increase competition for top-performing schools, as students with strong results may target the same institutions, potentially leading to oversubscription.

Despite the concerns, he described the reform as timely and practical, noting that the previous system often led to unrealistic school choices because students selected schools without knowing their results.

He said allowing candidates to make choices after accessing their results would promote fairness and help align school selection with academic performance, reducing placement disputes.
