Accra, April 11, – The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) has provided laptops to the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations to support the nationwide rollout of the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP).
The intervention forms part of efforts to equip the initiative with essential digital tools to ensure its effective implementation across the country.
The OMCP is a flagship national programme designed to build digital skills among Ghana’s youth, enhance employability, and position the country as a competitive player in the global digital economy. Approximately 6,500 specialised laptops will be distributed to 130 centres nationwide to facilitate training and operational activities.
Mr Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to digital transformation and inclusive access to technology during the presentation ceremony held in Accra.
He underscored the importance of strategic partnerships and institutional collaboration in achieving the programme’s ambitious objectives.
The Minister disclosed that following the programme’s launch nearly a year ago by President John Dramani Mahama, a dedicated team was constituted to assess the implementation landscape and produce a comprehensive report to guide the training phase.
Mr George highlighted the programme’s strong emphasis on job creation, noting that the training was structured to open employment opportunities for participants. He added that each of the 16 regions would host state-of-the-art training facilities, while 12 universities had been integrated into the initiative through collaboration with the Ministry of Education to enhance delivery and impact.
GIFEC’s contribution aligns with its mandate to facilitate universal access to electronic communications and promote digital inclusion, particularly in underserved and rural communities.
The nationwide rollout of the OMCP is expected to accelerate Ghana’s digitalisation agenda while empowering a new generation of technology-driven innovators and professionals.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Mr Mohammed Adams Sukparu, Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations; Mr Tanko Rashid-Computer, Administrator of GIFEC; Mrs Nana Akyaa Amoah-Amissah, Deputy Administrator; and Ms Francisca Adjei, Director of Corporate Affairs.
