Accra, April 16, – The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed four new Mpox cases, raising the national case count to 1,062 as of April 11, 2026.
No hospital admissions have been recorded, while the death toll remains at eight.
Health authorities said surveillance remained active across all 16 regions, with response teams monitoring the situation to contain further spread.
Officials cautioned that although recent cases appeared less severe, the public must not be complacent.
The GHS explained that Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, spreads mainly through close physical contact, including exposure to body fluids, skin lesions, respiratory droplets, and contaminated surfaces.
It said symptoms typically include fever, swollen lymph nodes and a painful rash, which in some cases could leave permanent scars.
The Service advised the public to avoid close contact with persons exhibiting unusual rashes, maintain good hygiene and seek early medical attention when experiencing flu-like symptoms.
It also encouraged frequent handwashing, use of hand sanitisers and mask-wearing as key preventive measures.
Beyond Ghana, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 17,000 suspected cases and 517 deaths across the continent in 2024.
The World Health Organization has renewed alerts, stressing the need for sustained vigilance as vaccines are gradually deployed to protect high-risk populations.
