GHS CLARIFIES USE OF TRICYCLES, DENIES AMBULANCE CLAIMS

Accra, April 19, – The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has refuted claims circulating on social media that newly procured tricycles under the Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) programme were intended for ambulance services.

The Service explained that the tricycles were introduced to enhance primary healthcare delivery at the community level, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, and not for emergency medical transport.

In a statement copied to the press, the GHS said the initiative formed part of efforts to expand equitable access to essential health services across the country.

It noted that the tricycles, which are fitted with cargo compartments, would support Community Health Nurses under the Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) system to carry vaccines, medical supplies, diagnostic tools and health education materials during outreach activities.

According to the Service, the vehicles would help address logistical challenges, improve service delivery and strengthen integrated healthcare at the grassroots.

The GHS added that the tricycles were designed to operate effectively on rough terrain, making them suitable for rural communities, while also offering improved safety and protection in adverse weather conditions.

It further indicated that similar tricycles had been successfully used in previous outreach programmes, contributing to improved access to healthcare services.

The Service urged the public to disregard misinformation and rely on official sources for accurate information on health interventions.
