Ankobra (W/R), April 19, – Residents of Ankobra-Sanwoma in the Ellembelle District are facing growing danger from tidal waves, prompting an urgent appeal for government intervention to prevent possible disaster.
Mr Patrick Assuah, Assembly Member for the Ankobra Electoral Area, said recurrent flooding caused by rising sea levels and river overflow had displaced residents and left parts of the community submerged.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency during a visit to the area, he described the situation as worsening, with homes and livelihoods increasingly at risk.
“When the sea surges, it spills over into the River Ankobra, and the town gets flooded. If nothing is done, we risk losing lives and property,” he warned.
Observation of the banks of the River Ankobra showed clear signs of recent overflow, with surrounding areas affected by floodwaters.
Mr Assuah attributed the situation partly to ongoing sea defence works at nearby coastal areas, alleging that the project had redirected tidal pressure towards Ankobra.
He therefore called for an extension of the sea defence system to cover the Ankobra shoreline to protect the community from further damage.
The Assembly Member also appealed for the construction of proper drainage systems to manage floodwaters and reduce the impact of heavy tides.
He urged the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to intervene and escalate the issue for immediate government action.
Mr Assuah stressed that without timely measures, the entire community could be overwhelmed by flooding, leading to a humanitarian crisis.
