GCX, Cannabis Chamber strike deal to formalise Ghana’s cannabis market

Accra, April 8, – The Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) and the Chamber of Cannabis Industry Ghana have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to drive the structured development of the country’s emerging cannabis industry.

The partnership is aimed at establishing a transparent and regulated market system to support the cultivation, processing and trade of cannabis for industrial and medicinal purposes.

The Chief Executive Officer of GCX, Ms Evelyn Abakah, said the collaboration marked a strategic move to build a formal and export-ready cannabis sector aligned with Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.

She noted that the Exchange’s electronic trading platform would enhance market access for producers while promoting transparency, price discovery and regulatory compliance.

Ms Abakah added that a rules-based system would boost investor confidence and improve oversight for regulators through better data visibility.

The President of the Chamber of Cannabis Industry Ghana, Dr Mark Darko, described the agreement as a major step towards practical industry development anchored on strong institutions and effective regulation.

He said integrating the cannabis sector into a structured trading platform would improve traceability, integrity and global competitiveness.

Counsel for the Chamber, Mr Dickson Tweneboa-Kodua, said the partnership signalled Ghana’s transition from legal approval to institutional readiness for the industry.

He noted that sustainable industry growth required not only enabling laws but also credible systems to support implementation.

The initiative is expected to strengthen value chains, attract responsible investment, create jobs and boost Ghana’s non-traditional exports.

Ghana amended its narcotics laws in 2020 to allow the cultivation of cannabis with low tetrahydrocannabinol content for industrial and medicinal use under a regulated framework.
