Accra, April 14, – Green Communities International (GCI), a sustainability-focused non-profit organisation, has called for a ban on plastic wrapping of luggage at airports as part of efforts to reduce plastic pollution in Ghana.
The organisation argued that eliminating the practice would significantly reduce plastic waste that clogs drainage systems, pollutes water bodies and contributes to flooding in urban areas.
Speaking at the inauguration of the GCI Board of Trustees in Accra, Prof. Douglas Boateng, Board Chairman, said simple behavioural and policy changes could produce major environmental benefits.
He suggested that instead of plastic wrapping services, airports could rely on clear signage and waste bins to encourage proper disposal.
“At the airport, these plastic wrappers should be left there. You don’t need a policeman; just put a sign and provide the bins,” he said.
Prof. Boateng stressed that tackling environmental degradation required both regulatory action and a shift in public attitudes towards waste management.
He warned that failure to act could worsen long-term environmental challenges, noting that pollution often accumulates silently but has lasting consequences.
“The true test is what we choose to leave behind,” he added.
Prof. De-Graft Owusu-Manu, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GCI, said the organisation was committed to promoting sustainable development through research, advocacy and community engagement.
He said GCI aimed to position itself as a leading eco-solutions hub in Africa, focusing on practical interventions to support environmental protection.
