Kasoa, April 14, – The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has closed down six private vehicle testing stations (PVTS) for issuing roadworthy certificates to vehicles that were not properly inspected.
The action, taken within the past two to three months, forms part of measures to enforce compliance and enhance road safety nationwide.
Mr Julius Neequaye Kotey, Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, disclosed this at the inauguration of a new PVTS facility at Buduburam, near Kasoa.
He warned operators against engaging in fraudulent practices, stressing the need for strict adherence to inspection standards.
“Let’s ensure that vehicles certified here are genuinely roadworthy,” he said, adding that intensified monitoring would continue across all testing centres.
Mr Kotey noted that ensuring road safety was a shared responsibility, cautioning that lapses in vehicle inspection could have fatal consequences.
The inauguration was part of a broader expansion drive, which included the opening of three new facilities – the Anyaa Ultra Centre, Kasoa Ultra Centre, and the Buduburam PVTS – to improve access to DVLA services.
He explained that while PVTS facilities focused on vehicle inspection and issuance of test reports, Ultra Centres offered comprehensive services such as vehicle registration, licensing, and ownership transfers.
The DVLA CEO also announced plans to introduce RFID-enabled number plates to improve vehicle tracking and enforcement.
“These plates will be linked to a central database to enhance traceability and support enforcement efforts,” he said.
He added that the Authority was expanding its operations to all districts to reduce the activities of unauthorised intermediaries, popularly known as “goro boys,” and urged vehicle owners to update their records in the system.
Madam Philis Naa Koryoo Okunor, Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, called on staff to maintain high standards of professionalism and encouraged residents to make use of the services.
Mr Emmanuel Adotey Allotey, Municipal Chief Executive for Ga Central, commended the DVLA for expanding its services and pledged the Assembly’s support for future initiatives.
