Digitisation Transforming Ghana’s Carnival Experience – Federation

Accra, April 5 – The National Federation of Masqueraders and Fancy Dress of Ghana (NFMFD) has highlighted the transformative role of digitisation in organising and experiencing carnival events nationwide.

Calls for Government Support

  • Mr Eric Ohene Larbi, Patron of NFMFD, appealed to the Government to support digitisation in the carnival and cultural industry to unlock its full potential.
  • He emphasized that digital technologies enabled virtual carnival events, online ticketing, event schedules, interactive sessions, and enhanced social media engagement.
  • Virtual Reality (VR) experiences and costume design software can improve creativity, presentation, and audience participation.

Youth Empowerment and Skills Development

  • Mr Martin Kwaku Bedzra, Vice President of the Federation, stressed that training and mentorship in costume design and music production, along with scholarships, grants, internships, and apprenticeships, would empower youth and create sustainable employment opportunities.
  • Mr Andrew Kofi Duodu, Public Relations Officer, noted that the Black Star Carnival could help develop skills and generate income, addressing unemployment while showcasing Ghanaian cultural heritage.

Global Collaboration

  • The World Carnival Commission (WCC) appointed Federation members as cultural ambassadors to foster international collaboration, exchange knowledge, and promote innovation in the masquerade sector.
  • The WCC team engaged key institutions, including Parliament, Ministry of Tourism, National Commission on Culture, National Youth Authority, Office of the President, Diaspora Affairs Office, Black Star Experience Office, and Ghana Tourism Authority.
  • The Federation invited the WCC to support the Black Star Carnival, aiming to build a cohesive Ghanaian masquerade brand that balances local identity with international standards.

The Federation’s focus is on content creation, youth employment, skill development, and positioning masquerade as a year-round cultural product.
