Court jails transcriber four years for theft, misleading police

Accra, April 20, – An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 44-year-old transcriber, Alex Ofosu, to four years’ imprisonment for stealing and providing false information to a public officer.

Ofosu was convicted on his own plea after admitting to unlawfully possessing a Samsung Galaxy A16 mobile phone valued at GH¢2,500, as well as a smartwatch and a folding desktop phone stand, each valued at GH¢200.

The court, presided over by Mrs Emmanuella Sarah Asmah, heard that the accused gave inconsistent accounts during police investigations regarding how he came into possession of the phone.

Initially, he told investigators that he had purchased the device from a dealer at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, but subsequent checks by the Police disproved the claim.

In a later statement, he changed his account, claiming the phone had been acquired through a friend whose identity and whereabouts he could not establish.

Prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, said the case originated from a report filed by two University of Ghana students, Kugbey Kofi Mawuli and Alexander Oduro, whose belongings were stolen while they were writing an examination on February 26, 2026.

The stolen items included mobile phones, notably an iPhone 17 Pro Max valued at GH¢18,000 and a Samsung Galaxy A16, among other valuables.

Police investigations, supported by itemised billing data, traced the Samsung device to Ofosu, who resides at Madina.

The court heard that although he was invited to assist with investigations, he failed to honour the invitation and instead sent the phone to the Police through a commercial motor rider.

He was later arrested at his residence, where additional items linked to the theft were retrieved.

The prosecution said the accused’s brother later handed over the smartwatch and phone stand found in his room to the Police.

The complainant, Mr Oduro, identified the retrieved items as his property.
