Central Region gets mobile vans to drive government communication

Cape Coast, April 16, – The Central Regional Office of the Information Services Department (ISD) has taken delivery of two Mobile Information Vans (MIVs) to strengthen the dissemination of government policies and programmes, particularly in remote communities.

The vans, fitted with public address systems, LCD screens, projectors and internet connectivity, will facilitate live broadcasts, community engagements and interactive feedback sessions.

Each vehicle is capable of covering up to 200 kilometres daily and will be used for town hall meetings, policy dialogues and public education campaigns to enhance citizen participation.

The MIVs were procured under government’s digital communication strategy to improve outreach beyond traditional platforms such as radio and billboards.

They are expected to support the rollout of key initiatives, including education interventions like free tertiary education for persons with disabilities and the “no fees stress” policy for first-year students, as well as health programmes such as the Ghana Medical Care Trust (MahamaCares).

Other areas of focus include expanded healthcare access, infrastructure development under the “Big Push” agenda and district-level projects funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund.

At a brief handing-over ceremony, Mr Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, Central Regional Minister, said the vans would help bridge the information gap between government and the public.

“These vans will serve as mobile platforms to explain government policies and also provide a channel for feedback from the people,” he said.

He urged the ISD to ensure proper use and maintenance of the vehicles to guarantee longevity and efficient service delivery.

Mrs Lily Bempong, Central Regional Information Officer, described the initiative as a significant step towards deepening public engagement, especially in rural communities.

She said out of 40 vans distributed nationwide, the region received three to enhance communication efforts.

Mrs Bempong explained that seven districts and municipalities had been grouped into clusters, each with a designated centre for easy deployment of the vans.

She added that the vans would also be used to promote public awareness on security, disaster preparedness and conflict resolution to build resilient communities.

She called on stakeholders, including district assemblies, traditional authorities, community leaders and the media, to collaborate with the ISD to maximise the benefits of the initiative.
