Building Collapse Spurs Call for Review of Engineering Standards

Accra, Mar. 30, – The Institution of Engineering and Technology Ghana (IET-GH) has called for a thorough review of engineering standards following the collapse of a four-storey building under construction in the Ayawaso Central Municipality.

In a statement signed by Mr. Wonder Davor, President of IET-GH, the institution expressed deep concern over the incident and urged authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause. Preliminary assessments suggest that such structural failures often result from multiple factors, including inadequate design, poor construction practices, use of substandard materials, premature removal of formwork, overloading during construction, and foundation challenges.

The statement emphasized the critical importance of ensuring the integrity of load-bearing elements, particularly ground-level columns, essential to multi-storey building stability. IET-GH stressed that only an independent technical investigation, led by the Engineering Council Ghana and conducted by qualified civil or structural engineers, could confirm the precise cause.

The institution also advised contractors to strictly adhere to approved drawings and specifications, maintain quality control, and avoid unsafe cost-cutting practices. Engineers and consultants were urged to uphold professional standards by ensuring proper design and supervision, while Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies were called upon to intensify monitoring and enforcement of building regulations.

IET-GH highlighted the need to improve emergency response capacity, noting that modern rescue equipment is vital for saving lives. The public was cautioned to avoid unsafe or incomplete structures, particularly with the rainy season approaching. The institution extended condolences to families affected by the tragedy and wished the injured a speedy recovery, reaffirming its commitment to safety and professionalism in Ghana’s built environment.
