Australian teen Gout Gout storms to 200m title with record-breaking run

Ho, April 15, – Australian sprint prodigy Gout Gout has produced a sensational performance, winning his national 200m title in a time that eclipses Usain Bolt’s mark at the same age.

The 18-year-old sprint sensation stopped the clock at 19.67 seconds in Sydney, a new world U20 best and the fastest time recorded globally this year.

It was also the first official sub-20-second performance of his career, improving on a wind-assisted 19.84 he recorded last season.

Gout’s run draws comparisons with Jamaican legend Usain Bolt, who ran 19.93 in 2004 as a teenager at age 17, setting a junior benchmark he never improved upon before rising to global dominance.

The Australian athlete had already signalled his potential last year when he became the fastest 16-year-old in history after clocking 20.06 seconds.

American sprinter Erriyon Knighton remains the fastest U20 performer overall with 19.49 seconds (unratified), while his recognised record of 19.69 had stood as a reference mark in the category until Gout’s latest breakthrough.

In the same race, fellow Australian Aidan Murphy delivered a strong performance of his own, finishing second in 19.88 seconds, making it a rare double sub-20 finish for Australian athletes.

Speaking after the race, Gout described the achievement as a major relief and a confidence boost.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment. Racing against strong athletes pushes us all to another level,” he said.

“There’s a big weight off my shoulders knowing I’ve done it legally and that I can run times like this consistently.”

He added that competing alongside top domestic rivals has helped sharpen his performance, as he now turns attention to upcoming international commitments.

Gout has opted to bypass the Commonwealth Games to focus on preparations for the World U20 Championships in Oregon scheduled for August.
