AMA, OR Foundation Launch Major Desilting Drive at Kantamanto

Accra, March 29, – The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the OR Foundation and the Kantamanto Obroni Wawu Business Association (KOBA), has begun a major desilting exercise to reduce flooding in Kantamanto Market, one of Accra’s busiest commercial hubs.

The operation, which started over the weekend, involves 154 waste workers from the Tide Turners and June 4 Task Force. The team cleared approximately 400 metres of heavily silted drains, removing 60 tonnes of plastic and textile waste within 12 hours, with a total of 120 tonnes expected to be cleared.

Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey emphasised the need for stakeholder collaboration to build a flood-resilient city and urged traders to avoid dumping refuse into drains.

Mr. Solomon Noi, Head of Waste Management at AMA, noted the drains’ enclosed design posed maintenance challenges but expressed confidence that the exercise would significantly reduce flooding and safeguard livelihoods.

David Akpablie, Environmental Field Operations Lead at the OR Foundation, called for sustainable waste management practices to ensure long-term benefits.

The desilting covers the stretch from Tema Station storm drain through Okai Kwei Road, the June 4 Market, and into the Korle Lagoon. June 4 Task Force leaders pledged continued sanitation support in the market enclave.
