Somanya (E/R), April 22, – A suspected child trafficking attempt has been foiled after the Ghana Police Service rescued a nine-year-old girl and arrested a 36-year-old woman at the Accra (Kotoka) International Airport.
The suspect, identified as Regina Mamle Tawiah, was picked up on April 20 following a report by the victim’s father that his daughter had gone missing from their home at Agormanya Zongo in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality.
According to the Eastern Regional Police Command, swift intelligence gathering led officers from the Odumase-Krobo District, with support from the Bureau of National Investigations, to track the suspect to the airport, where the child was recovered.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect was attempting to transport the girl to Kenya.
The Police said the victim had been safely reunited with her family.
Tawiah was put before the Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court on April 21, where she denied the charge.
The court remanded her into Police custody to assist with further investigations, with the case adjourned to May 5 for case management.
The Police have appealed to the public to be alert and promptly report suspicious movements to help curb crime.
