Accra, March 28, – A 20-year-old woman who allegedly published a false Snapchat post labelling an Uber driver a “murderer” and a “thief” has been granted GH¢100,000 bail by an Adenta Circuit Court.
The accused, Promise Yayra Asamani, denied the charge of publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm and is expected to reappear before the court on April 24, 2026.
The court heard that the case was triggered by a complaint from Selasie Kwaku Anthonio, a 43-year-old Uber driver, after a Snapchat post featuring his photograph and vehicle registration number went viral, accusing him of being a criminal and claiming he used signal jammers and carried weapons.
Prosecution said the complainant became aware of the post on March 10, 2026, after his nephew informed him, and he subsequently received several distress calls from customers and relatives, while his Uber account was blocked, affecting his livelihood.
Investigations led to the arrest of Stephanie Asamani, sister of the accused, who told Police she had earlier taken a ride with the complainant from Spintex to Oyibi and later shared her experience with her sisters, including a screenshot of the driver’s profile.
Police investigations established that Promise Yayra Asamani used the information to make the Snapchat post, although she had no evidence to support the allegations.
The prosecution said the accused failed to honour a Police invitation and was later arrested. She admitted during interrogation that she posted the information based solely on her sister’s narration to “create awareness.”
Police have cautioned the public against publishing unverified information on social media, noting that such acts constitute an offence under the laws of the country.
