Three technical universities planned for Bono East, Oti and Savanna Regions

Accra, Feb. 28, – President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish three new technical universities in the Bono East, Oti and Savanna Regions as part of efforts to expand tertiary education access in underserved parts of the country.

Delivering the State of the Nation Address in Parliament, the President disclosed that the Government had entered into international partnerships to set up one technical university at Kintampo in the Bono East Region and another at Jasikan in the Oti Region.

He further revealed that a grant from China had been secured to establish a new public university at Damongo in the Savanna Region, aimed at widening higher education opportunities in the northern sector.

President Mahama emphasised that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) remained central to the administration’s strategy to tackle youth unemployment and strengthen skills development. He announced plans for the construction of six Regional TVET Centres of Excellence across the country to provide practical, industry-aligned training tailored to labour market demands.

The President also indicated that the national curriculum was under review to align with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Future of Education and Skills framework, a move intended to make TVET delivery more adaptive and resilient.

On inclusive education, he stated that the Free Tertiary Education Policy for Persons with Disabilities had been rolled out nationwide, benefiting eligible students enrolled in tertiary institutions.

He added that the amended Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Act had created a dedicated and sustainable financing mechanism to support free education for learners with special needs, with implementation scheduled to commence in the 2026 academic year.
