SSNIT eyes GH¢8.21bn pension payments in 2026

Sunyani (Bono), March 17, – The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) expects its pension obligations to rise to GH¢8.21 billion by the end of 2026, following a total payout of GH¢6.77 billion in 2025.

The projection was made by Mr Frank Molbila, General Manager responsible for Benefits, during a stakeholder forum in Sunyani organised jointly with the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

The engagement, held under the theme “Empowering Unions, Secure Futures: Deepening Pension Literacy across Ghana,” forms part of a nationwide effort to enhance workers’ understanding of pension systems and strengthen collaboration with organised labour.

Mr Molbila underscored the importance of enrolling on the scheme, describing it as a dependable safeguard for income security in retirement. He also advised contributors to keep their records updated to avoid future discrepancies.

He noted that under the scheme, contributors who retire at age 60 are entitled to monthly pension payments for life, positioning SSNIT as a critical pillar of social protection.

Speaking to the media, Mr Adam Sulley, Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations and Benefits, reiterated that pension contributions were mandatory for all workers, regardless of their employment sector.

He said the ongoing outreach programme was designed to educate contributors and promote greater appreciation of SSNIT’s role in long-term financial planning.

Mr Joseph Ansah, Secretary General of the TUC, urged workers to take an active interest in their pension contributions by verifying that employers remit payments regularly and correcting any anomalies promptly.
