Prampram, March 10, – Madam Patience Ami Mamattah, Ningo-Prampram Municipal Health Director, has called on the public to be vigilant for suicidal tendencies among relatives, friends, and associates to help reduce suicide attempts.
She urged families, church members, and community leaders to notice behavioural changes in people around them and encourage those exhibiting warning signs to seek professional care.
“We should all look out for signs in our families, church members, and other close associates and support them to seek care,” Madam Mamattah said.
She highlighted key warning signs, including mood swings, persistent sadness, feelings of emptiness and hopelessness, loss of interest in activities, reduced appetite, anxiety, irritability, excessive guilt, difficulty concentrating, and social withdrawal.
Data from the health directorate shows that 97 attempted suicide cases were recorded in 2025, compared with 10 in 2024 and five in 2023. Depression cases also rose sharply to 364 in 2025 from 26 in 2024 and 11 in 2023. Madam Mamattah explained that the increase is largely due to the introduction of population-level mental health screening in 2025.
She encouraged residents to take mental health seriously and seek professional help when necessary, stressing that early intervention could save lives.
