Accra, March 13, – President John Dramani Mahama on Friday met with Mr. Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the Korean National Assembly, in Seoul, South Korea, during his five-day official visit to the East Asian nation.
This marks the fourth time President Mahama has visited South Korea. His previous trips include a 2010 visit as Ghana’s Vice President, a 2018 attendance at the African Development Bank Board meeting in Busan, and a 2024 visit for the Africa–South Korea summit.
President Mahama described the meeting as a demonstration of the strong and growing ties between the two countries. “Next year, Ghana and South Korea will commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations. Our partnership is built on shared democratic values,” he said, noting Ghana’s continued role as a stable democracy in West Africa despite regional political unrest.
The President praised the Speaker and the Korean Parliament for their contributions to peace and stability during recent political challenges in South Korea, emphasizing that strong institutions are key to sustaining democracy. Drawing on his own parliamentary experience, he highlighted the importance of legislative systems in upholding governance.
Discussions during the visit included bilateral talks with President Lee Jae Myung and resulted in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding. These cover climate change collaboration, maritime safety, and digital innovation, focusing on knowledge exchange and technology transfer to support Ghana’s development agenda.
Speaker Woo lauded Ghana’s democratic record, peaceful transitions of power, and President Mahama’s economic leadership. He noted that Ghana, like South Korea during the Asian Financial Crisis, had implemented IMF-supported measures and successfully stabilised its economy.
“The progress you have achieved in reducing inflation and strengthening the currency is commendable,” Speaker Woo said, praising President Mahama’s stewardship.
