NSA to Introduce Compulsory Military Training for Service Personnel from July

Tema, March 26, – The National Service Authority (NSA) will from July 2026 implement a mandatory military orientation programme for national service personnel nationwide.

The Director-General of the NSA, Ms Ruth Dela Seddoh, said the rollout would begin with an initial batch of 10,000 personnel.

She announced this at the passing-out ceremony of 40 National Service Personnel posted to TDC Ghana Limited, who had completed a two-week military orientation programme.

The training, held at the First Infantry Battalion at Michel Camp, involved 22 males and 18 females and focused on discipline, physical fitness and civic responsibility.

Ms Seddoh explained that the initiative, which had undergone a successful pilot phase, was aimed at instilling discipline, patriotism and leadership skills among graduates undertaking national service.

She stressed that the programme was not intended to militarise participants but to equip them with essential life skills.

“The orientation is designed to build discipline, national pride, physical fitness, leadership abilities and improve time management,” she said.

She added that participants were also trained in emergency preparedness and response to enhance their contribution to national development.

The Director-General referenced the 2025–2026 State of the Nation Address, where President John Dramani Mahama underscored the importance of such initiatives in shaping the youth for national service.

Ms Seddoh commended the Managing Director of TDC Ghana Limited, Mr Courage Nunekpeku, for initiating the training programme for personnel assigned to the company.

She expressed satisfaction with the performance of the trainees, noting that their ability to execute complex drills within a short period reflected discipline and commitment.

“I am particularly excited about this initiative, and I want to assure TDC that next year we are likely to increase the number of personnel posted here because we expect to have more disciplined young people,” she said.

She also acknowledged the support of the Military High Command and the First Infantry Battalion in implementing the programme.

Ms Seddoh urged the personnel to apply the discipline and skills acquired to their professional and personal lives.

The trainees received instruction in drills, physical fitness, first aid, responsible citizenship and work ethics.
