Neglected Tropical Diseases Persist in Oti Region Despite Interventions – Health Director

Worawora (O/R), March 25, – Cases of yaws, Buruli ulcer, and elephantiasis continue to affect communities in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region, despite ongoing government and partner efforts to control them.

Dr. Kofi Amo-Kodieh, Oti Regional Director of Health Services, raised concerns over the lingering presence of these Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), pointing to poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, and inadequate healthcare services as key factors sustaining transmission.

“The continued occurrence of these diseases reflects gaps in water, sanitation, hygiene, and access to health services,” he said.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reportedly stepped up disease surveillance, bolstered health systems, and intensified community outreach programs to address the issue. Dr. Amo-Kodieh urged residents to maintain personal hygiene, ensure environmental cleanliness, and seek early treatment for symptoms.

He emphasized that improving access to potable water and proper sanitation is critical to breaking the cycle of infection and protecting public health.

The Oti Regional Health Directorate called for enhanced collaboration among local authorities, health stakeholders, and communities to eliminate NTDs and strengthen preventive measures.
