National Chief Imam Condemns Killing of Ayatollah Khamenei

Accra, Mar. 3, 2026 – Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam of Ghana, has expressed condolences to Iran following the reported assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In a statement, the Chief Imam said the Muslim community in Ghana was deeply saddened by the incident, describing Khamenei as “an icon in the global Islamic fraternity.” He praised the late leader as “a pious man who combined service to his people with worship of Allah, demonstrating the compatibility of religion and governance for social order and national development.”

The statement also highlighted Khamenei as “a symbol of resistance and hope for the oppressed.” Sheikh Sharubutu denounced what he termed “US-cum-Israeli aggression” leading to Khamenei’s martyrdom during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

He expressed grief over all lives lost in the conflict, urging respect for national sovereignty, human dignity, and the sanctity of Ramadan. The Chief Imam called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, emphasizing that pragmatic peace-building should replace escalating rhetoric. He noted that while the conflict is largely geo-political, interfaith harmony is essential for lasting solutions.
