ECG Opens Meters to Independent Testing After Billing Complaints

Accra, March 3, 2026  – The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated an independent review of its electricity meters following concerns by some prepaid customers over billing levels.

The company said its metering and billing systems comply with strict national and international standards, noting that all meters undergo extensive testing and calibration before deployment.

Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager for External Communications, explained that ECG operates a modern metering laboratory and applies a quality assurance regime aligned with approved technical benchmarks.

He added that each meter is independently tested and certified by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) prior to installation.

Despite maintaining that its meters are accurate and reliable, the company acknowledged that some customers may have genuine billing concerns. Investigations into reported cases have commenced in line with a directive from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition.

To reinforce public confidence, ECG has requested the GSA to conduct random independent testing of selected meters, both in the laboratory and in the field. Findings from the exercise will be compiled into a report for submission to the Minister.

The company said it remained committed to transparency and responsive service delivery as the review process continues.
