Mahama Urges Community Involvement in Use of District Assembly Funds

Sunyani (Bono), March 20, – President John Dramani Mahama has called on traditional leaders and community members to take an active role in monitoring how the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) is utilised.

He urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to work closely with Assembly Members to ensure that funds were directed towards impactful development projects.

The President made the remarks during his Regional Accountability Series in Sunyani, part of his two-day “Reset Ghana Tour” of the Bono Region.

The forum provided an opportunity for citizens to interact with the President on governance issues and assess his administration’s performance over the past year.

Mr Mahama stressed that the DACF must be used responsibly to improve living conditions and drive local development.

He also highlighted the government’s 24-hour economy initiative, noting that modern markets were being developed across all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to boost economic activity.

Additionally, he said the uncapping of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) had increased funding for education and healthcare delivery.

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the timely release of the DACF to support development projects.

He added that Assembly Members were receiving regular allowances to enhance their work, while stipends for paramount chiefs and queen mothers had been increased significantly.

Mr Ibrahim further noted that judicial committees within the various Houses of Chiefs were being strengthened with resources to improve the chieftaincy institution.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Roads, Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, reiterated government’s resolve to improve road infrastructure nationwide.

He said the Bono Region was benefiting from the “Big Push” programme, with key projects such as the Jinijini-Sampa Road progressing steadily and expected to be completed by 2027.
