Mahama commissions Sahara Group LPG vessel in Ulsan, South Korea

Accra, March 12, – President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday commissioned the Sahara Group Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel, christened MT Asharami Ghana, in Ulsan, South Korea, as part of his five-day working visit to the East Asian nation.

The vessel, a key addition to Sahara Group’s downstream fleet, is designed for safe, efficient, and reliable LPG transportation, reflecting the company’s commitment to strengthening energy infrastructure and supporting sustainable development in West Africa. Built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Limited, the ship represents cutting-edge expertise in shipbuilding.

President Mahama commended the leadership, technical skill, and foresight of Sahara Group, West African Gas Limited (WAGL), Energy, and other partners involved in the project. He emphasized that the collaboration showcased the potential of innovation, investment, and partnership to bridge infrastructure gaps, expand regional markets, and create sustainable economic opportunities across Africa.

He noted that the commissioning highlights the value of international cooperation, reflecting strong partnerships between Africa and global allies based on mutual respect, shared prosperity, and sustainable development.

“This occasion represents more than the launch of a vessel. It marks a milestone in strengthening the infrastructure underpinning the global LPG supply chain,” the President stated.

He explained that for countries like Ghana and others relying on LPG imports, expanding shipping capacity enhances supply security, improves reliability, stabilizes prices, and diversifies supply sources.

President Mahama further described the vessel as a state-of-the-art dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier, exemplifying stakeholder collaboration and commitment to safe and efficient energy distribution. Through the WAGL energy initiative, MT Asharami Ghana represents a strategic expansion of the fleet to support evolving regional energy needs.

He emphasized that the vessel’s deployment not only strengthens LPG transport capacity but also reflects a collective drive to improve access to reliable and cleaner energy across West Africa and the continent.

Highlighting LPG’s role in the energy transition, the President said it offers a cleaner alternative to charcoal, firewood, and kerosene, contributing to public health improvements and environmental sustainability. He underlined that while Ghana produces about 50% of its LPG domestically, imports meet the remaining demand, and regional efforts are ongoing to expand clean energy access.

President Mahama said MT Asharami Ghana will enhance the ability to transport LPG safely and efficiently, ensuring industries, businesses, and households have access to modern energy services that promote economic growth and improved living standards.

“As we look ahead, we must support initiatives that expand clean energy access, foster inclusive growth, and strengthen economic resilience,” he added.

He concluded that MT Asharami Ghana carries the Ghanaian flag and symbolizes national energy security, complemented by the investment in a 6,000-metric ton storage facility by Sahara Group.

“May this vessel inspire further investment, innovation, and collaboration across Africa’s energy sector. Together, we can build the infrastructure and partnerships needed for a sustainable and prosperous energy future,” the President said.
