Adidome (V/R), March 26, – Ghana has been elected to the Steering Committee of the Parliamentary Conference on the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a four-year term, renewable subject to performance review.
The appointment marks Ghana’s first representation on the high-level Committee, highlighting the nation’s growing influence in global parliamentary discussions on trade and development.
Mr Alexander Roosevelt Hotordze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, Industry and Tourism and Member of Parliament for Central Tongu, announced that he, together with the Committee’s Ranking Member, Mr Michael Okyere Baafi, will serve as Ghana’s representatives.
He noted that the achievement followed Ghana’s active participation in the recent Parliamentary Conference, bolstered by sustained advocacy and diplomatic engagement.
An official communication is expected to be sent to Mr Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, to formally inform the House of Ghana’s new responsibility.
The Steering Committee is the primary body responsible for guiding the organization and strategic direction of the Parliamentary Conference. Its members include representatives from national parliaments, regional assemblies, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the European Parliament, and the WTO Secretariat.
Current membership spans countries such as Angola, Argentina, Bahrain, Botswana, Chile, China, Côte d’Ivoire, Cyprus, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nigeria, Poland, Senegal, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, and Uruguay, along with institutional partners like the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
The Committee’s mandate includes preparing draft outcomes of the Parliamentary Conference with support from designated rapporteurs and ensuring timely circulation to participants ahead of deliberations.
Mr Hotordze described Ghana’s inclusion as a strategic platform to influence inclusive, rules-based global trade policies and to promote the interests of developing economies within the multilateral trading system.
