Ghana cocoa farmers win top honours at global excellence awards

Accra, March 19, — Three Ghanaian cocoa farmers have won top honours at the Cacao of Excellence Awards, earning global recognition for Ghana’s cocoa sector.

Isaac Nyampong from Okorekrom in the Asante Akim South District won the gold award, while Isaac Asirifi Darko of Akim Osiem International in the Abuakwa North Municipality and David Otu Kabu of Kpone Praso in the Asante Akim South District received silver awards.

A fertiliser manufacturing company, Seyi-Jones, pledged GH¢200,000 to Mr Nyampong, while the two silver award winners each received GH¢100,000.

International recognition

Randy Abbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board, said the Cacao of Excellence Programme is an international initiative by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT.

He explained that the programme identifies, evaluates and promotes cocoa beans of exceptional quality from producing countries around the world.

The 2025 awards ceremony, held in February 2026 in Amsterdam, formed part of Amsterdam Cocoa Week, organised by Chocoa.

Ghana among world’s best

Dr Abbey said the competition was keenly contested, with 191 cocoa samples from 45 producing countries undergoing rigorous assessment.

The best 50 samples were processed into chocolate and evaluated by an international jury, with three Ghanaian farmers emerging among the top winners.

He said the achievement demonstrated Ghana’s continued leadership in premium-quality cocoa production, attributing the success to proper farm management and adherence to recommended post-harvest practices.

Mr Nyampong, 65, who began cocoa farming in 1979 and now cultivates 35 acres, credited extension services for helping improve his yields and encouraged young people to consider cocoa farming as a viable livelihood.

The other award winners also expressed appreciation for the recognition and pledged to share their knowledge with other farmers to help improve cocoa quality across the sector.
