Excavator operator sentenced to 15 years for Lakeside robbery

Accra, March 13, – An Adentan Circuit Court has sentenced Kingsley Abdul Wahab Lawani, a 48-year-old excavator operator, to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbing a woman and her son at gunpoint at Lakeside in Accra.

Lawani was convicted on five counts, including robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Prosecutor Chief Inspector Eric Ransford Abban told the court that the complainant, a businesswoman living at Lakeside Transformer, was attacked together with her son by Lawani and two accomplices—one deceased and the other currently at large.

The court heard that on April 27, 2025, the complainant returned home with her son in an unregistered Honda CRV when the assailants confronted them.

The robbers, armed with a pistol, fired a warning shot and demanded their belongings, seizing their mobile phones and the ignition key of the vehicle.

The victims raised an alarm, leading to the immediate arrest of Lawani at the scene, where police also recovered the firearm used in the attack.

One of his accomplices, Richard Opoku Adjei, sustained injuries during the attempted escape and later died at the Police Hospital.

Investigators recovered one empty cartridge and two live rounds of ammunition at the scene.

Lawani admitted committing the offence in his caution statement and was convicted after a full trial.
