Ellembelle Blue Water Guards Block Galamsey Machinery

Aiyinasi (W/R), March 22,– The Ellembelle District Command of Blue Water Guards has erected barricades at galamsey-prone zones to prevent illegal mining equipment and machinery from entering rivers and forest reserves.

The initiative is part of the government’s strategy to tackle the galamsey menace decisively and discourage illegal miners.

Mr Stephen Afena, Ellembelle District Coordinator of Blue Water Guards, identified six major roads where galamsey activities were common:

  1. Nkroful to Teleku-Bokazo through Anwia
  2. Aiyinasi to Nyamebekyere through Aiyinasi-North
  3. Ewereko to Mantukwa up to the Prestea border
  4. Awiebo to Asasetre road
  5. Salma to Akango and Aluku
  6. Nyamebekyere town to Sendu

He noted that while some roads were currently inactive due to logistics challenges, the blockade initiative would be effective because barring entry of equipment like excavators and Chan fang machines would hinder illegal mining operations.

The Coordinator emphasized that officers must maintain professionalism, avoid accepting bribes, and remain committed to restoring polluted water bodies.

Since assuming office last year, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, has spearheaded several interventions, including:

  • Blue Water Guards initiative
  • Anti-galamsey task force NAIMOS
  • Tree for Life Initiative
  • Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (RCOMSDEP)
  • Patriotic Journalists Against Galamsey (PAJAG)

These measures aim to combat illegal mining, protect natural resources, and promote sustainable land use.
