Kamgbunli (W/R), March 27, – Assembly Members along the coastal belt of the Ellembelle District in the Western Region have appealed to Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, to tackle the re-emergence of sargassum seaweeds along the Western coastline.
In a statement jointly signed by Mr Shaibu Issaka, former Presiding Member of the Ellembelle District Assembly, and other members, the group called for the reintroduction of Zoil and Eco-brigade initiatives to clear the seaweeds and improve sanitation along the shores. Copies of the statement were also sent to the Ellembelle District Chief Executive, Mr Joseph Armah Agyekum, and the Ghana News Agency.
The assembly members noted that the seaweed outbreak has devastated fishing livelihoods, entangled nets, reduced fish catches, and increased youth unemployment, leading some young people to engage in illegal activities, including small-scale mining (galamsey) and risky commercial motorcycle (okada) ventures.
They urged the Minister, who is also the MP for Ellembelle, to respond promptly, provide alternative livelihood support, implement community-led conservation initiatives, and offer food assistance to affected families.
The statement highlighted the potential impact of ministerial intervention, noting that Mr Armah-Kofi Buah could leverage his Ministry to restore livelihoods, promote sustainable development, and leave a lasting legacy in Nzemaland, drawing on his prior experience as Minister of Energy and Petroleum.
